7 Ways To Be Like, the Most Embarrassing Parent EverYou’ll hear it a lot throughout your parenting journey. Mom, you are so embarrassing. Dad, if you do that again, I’m going to like, die. Little do our children understand now, but pretty much everything we do is out of our intense love for them. Is that such a crime? So if you really want to ruin their lives, here are seven ways you can be like, the most embarrassing parent ever. 1. Cheer for them in public.Nothing is more humiliating than the people you love cheering you on at a baseball game, soccer match, gymnastics meet, or piano recital. It’s like, so embarrassing when family shows that they love and support you. So, go right ahead and cheer away! Let them know that you are proud of their accomplishments with a few shouts of “Great job!” and “Way to go!” Your kids will secretly love it. Just watch the volume of your voice and the things that you shout. Real embarrassment comes when you make a spectacle of yourself. 2. Hug them in public.Kids might cringe outwardly when you give them a little squeeze at school drop off or a big embrace after a competition, but as embarrassed as they may seem, kids dig the hugs. Showing your child a little public affection reinforces to them that you love them. It means security, unconditional support, and is just as sweet as a compliment. Be warned however, that kisses may cross the line. It may get a tad embarrassing for your kiddos to receive a big wet one in front of their friends. If you’re just a kisser and just can’t help it…small and on the top of the head is a pretty safe place for smooches to land. 3. Play 20-questions with their friends. If you want to be an embarrassing parent, make sure to ask your child’s friends lots of questions. Like, what do they like to do? What are their parents names? Have they ever been arrested? Just kidding, but parents who do get to know their children’s friends will be more secure letting them hang out. Although they may feel like you’re trying to ruin their lives, play the 20-questions game with all of your kids’ friends. Find out basics like where they live, what their families are like, and what their interests are. Just don’t act like an interrogator—keep your questions light and non-judgmental. 4. Make them do chores before they leave the house. But mom, so-and-so’s parents never make her do chores…why do I have to? The worst parents do everything in their power to make life miserable for kids…like doing chores. Chores are like, horrible. They teach responsibility…yuck! They teach the value of hard work {emphasis on the word hard}, and cool parents would never dream of making their kids do chores before leaving the house to do something fun. 5. Become their friend on Facebook. As if. Wanting to monitor their online activity to ensure their safety is simply unreasonable. Or to just want to be their--friend--weird! Because after all, online predators and scams aren’t real. No matter how embarrassing they claim you are being, be persistent in monitoring your child’s social media pages and other online activity. Ask to see your child’s cell phone regularly. But make sure you respect them at the same time. Kindly and openly tell them that you want to make sure they’re taking in the good stuff and not the bad. Things get ugly when you sneak and pry. 6. Talk to their teachers.Kids might act all mortified when they find out you’ve been talking to their teachers. After all, how dare you! How dare you take an interest in their education? How dare you speak to another adult about them? How dare you want them to graduate? As a former teacher, I loved meeting with parents. It showed me that they cared about their kids. What I didn’t love however, was feeling ambushed by them. Do your child and his teacher a favor and first schedule a meeting. Keep your cool and act like a caring adult. 7. Sing “Stayin’ Alive” in the shower. And finally, the most surefire way to completely and utterly be the most embarrassing parent ever…sing at the top of your lungs in the shower. Belt out “Stayin’ Alive,” rock out to Pearl Jam, and if you really want to make them red in the face, Justin Beiber’s “Sorry.” Although they may be dying on the outside, your kids are secretly smiling on the inside, thinking just how lucky they are to have such a groovy parent.
So, that’s it. It’s really not that hard to be like, a really embarrassing parent. Some of us hardly have to try at all! Good luck you groovy parents out there! But the best part of all the back-to-school preparations is the fashion show. Please tell me you did a back-to-school fashion show when you were a kid because it’s the best! First you line up all of your new outfits by which day you’ll wear them. (Raise your hand if you totally did this!) Then you yell at mom and dad to sit on the couch and get ready ‘cause you’re about to knock their socks off with a fashion show. Growing up, each of us five siblings took turns putting on an outfit and strutting our stuff in the family living room while mom and dad praised and clapped. SaveSave SaveSave The post Family Fashion Shows and Cute Back-to-School Gear Starting at $5 appeared first on How Does She. by Nicolette via Home And Garden via Blogger Family Fashion Shows and Cute Back-to-School Gear Starting at $5 As a born-and-raised Idaho girl, I often find myself persuading others that Idaho has so much more to offer than potatoes and Napoleon Dynamite—incredible nooks and breathtaking crannies that will leave you already planning a return trip. One of those incredible nooks, nestled in lush northern Idaho, is Coeur d’Alene. If you live in Idaho, shame on you if you’ve never been. And if you live anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is a must on your travel bucket list. The rest of you who are looking for a gorgeous lake vacation with rolling hills covered with aromatic pine trees, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is only a plane ride to Spokane, Washington then a quick drive away. You’ll join a list of celebrities (like Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong) who frequently make Coeur d’Alene, Idaho a vacation destination. If you’re looking for an incredible family trip or couple’s retreat, here are the BEST things to do in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The 12 Best Things To Do in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho1. Stay and playCoeur d’Alene is a vacation destination so there are plenty of places to stay. We like to find a VRBO that feels more like home. Ideally, I’d spend at least five days there because there is just so much to do. It’s nice to have a place with a kitchen where you can come home and rest your feet after a busy day. There are plenty of hotels and resorts as well. 2. City ParkThe city of Coeur d’Alene boasts two of the very best parks I’ve ever been to. The first is City Park with the unbelievable Fort Sherman Playground. This lakeside park is literally shoulder to shoulder with Lake Coeur d’Alene. It’s got a bandshell where you’ll hear live music, outdoor basketball courts for playing some hoops, and Fort Sherman Playground, a labyrinth of wooden bridges, monkey bars, and mini turrets that kept my kids occupied for three hours! It is literally a kid’s dream. 3. McEuen ParkAs if one amazing park wasn’t enough, Coeur d’Alene is also home to McEuen Park. You could easily spend an entire day here. McEuen Park has a huge and unique splash pad, the largest playground in the city with new amenities, tennis courts, basketball courts, and the trail head for Tubb’s Hill. When you get hungry, just tread a few steps to nearby restaurants and shops all within walking distance. 4. Tubb’s HillYou guys. Tubb’s Hill in Coeur d’Alene awakened all of the things I loved as a kid growing up in Idaho. The serenity of being in nature, the thrill of jumping off massive cliffs into the clear water below, and the cool and utter calmness of being on the water. Tubb’s Hill is a 138 mountain peninsula and the crown jewel of Coeur d’Alene. From the trail head in McEuen Park, you can hike the perimeter of the “hill” which is 2.2 miles and family friendly. We took our kids ages 2, 4, 6, and 8 (with a hiking backpack for our two-year-old) and they did great! Pack snacks, waters, and your swimsuits because there are beaches to enjoy and my favorite—cliffs to jump off! Also, make sure you cross the suspension bridge about halfway through the hike. There are massive cliffs for teens and adults and smaller ones that are kid-appropriate. My three oldest kids had a blast jumping off of the huge boulders into the cool lake water. 5. Fun on the lakeIf you love being on the lake, you’ve come to the right place. Lake Coeur d’Alene spans 25 miles but is only one to three miles wide so you can see the beautiful shore on the other side. I’d suggest spending at lease one whole day enjoying the lake. Bring or rent paddle boards, kayaks, and inflatable toys. You can even rent boats, jet skis, even charter a sea plane. 6. Bike the incredible Hiawatha trail. If you’ve never heard of it, the Route of the Hiawatha is one of those must-see experiences of a lifetime. The Hiawatha Trail is a 15-mile section of abandoned railroad including 10 tunnels and 7 towering trestle bridges that the U.S. Forest Service has turned into a biking trail. Snaking through the Bitterroot Mountains right on the border of Idaho and Montana, the Hiawatha Trail has some of the most spectacular views in the world. The entire Hiawatha Trail is gradually downhill and takes about two hours to complete. If you’re biking with kids like us, expect for twice that amount of time. You’ll want a bike trailer for kids under 5 years old. I’d say ages 6 and up are good to ride the entire trail, you just may have to stop a few times along the way. Your first date with the Hiawatha Trail is a 1.66 mile long train tunnel that is both impressive and memorable. You’ll never forget riding bikes through the pitch dark tunnel with echoes of dripping water and only the light of your head lamp to guide you. Before you go, make sure you read up on everything you need to know about the Hiawatha. Make sure you bring: a jacket (the tunnel gets cold), plenty of water (there are a few water stations and bathrooms along the way), lunch and snacks (park your bike and have a picnic!), a bike pump (just in case). 7. Enjoy a day at Silverwood theme park.If you get tired of nature’s entertainment, head to Silverwood Theme Park and Boulder Beach. Roller coasters, bumper boats and so much more—you kids will have a blast spending a day here! 8. Best eatsLet’s be real. One of the best parts about a vacation is eating. Coeur d’Alene has some amazing eats. Here are the favorites: Hudsons Hamburgers– Iconic and famous with celebs and locals alike, Hudsons has been serving up no-frills, down-home good burgers since 1907. Simple then and simple now, if you’re in Coeur d’Alene, you have to stop at Hudsons. It’s practically a requirement. Fire Artisan Pizza– Pizza fans and fancy pants foodies alike will love Fire Artisan Pizza. Try the Crimini and the Camino for something different and delicious! Try the food trucks. You won’t go wrong with any of the dozens of food trucks in Coeur d’Alene. Try Meltz for gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and RawDeadFish for the best sushi. Get a Gooey’s Sundae at The Coeur d’Alene Resort. Three words: big, gooey, so- amazing-your-eyes-will-pop-open. (Just goes to show you can’t explain it in only three words!)9. Find Mudgy and Millie.Mudgy Moose and his friend Millie Mouse are fictional characters created by best-selling author and resident of Coeur d’Alene Susan Nipp. Thanks to the Coeur d’Alene Public Library Foundation, you can find Mudgy and Millie in a real life hide-and-seek game around the city! Five life-sized bronze statues are hidden around Coeur d’Alene and you can find them! 10. That floating green.Golf fans, you’re in for a treat. Coeur d’Alene is home to what Golf Digest has called America’s Most Beautiful Resort Golf Course. Waterfront tee boxes and the floating green are enough to make The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course an unforgettable experience. 11. Shopping {farmers markets, fairs, and Figpickles toy store!}Check out the upcoming events in Coeur d’Alene and try and catch a street fair or concert series. Make sure to visit the Downtown Farmers Market as well as Figpickels Toy Emporium and all the other shops around town. 12. Huckleberry picking and eagle watching.Last but certainly not least, pick huckleberries in the Coeur d’Alene National Forest and then come back and make your own huckleberry milkshakes. Or head to the east side of the lake for some eagle watching. So whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure, a little relaxation by the lake, or some big-time fun, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is your place! The post The 12 Best Things To Do in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho appeared first on How Does She. by Nicolette via Home And Garden via Blogger The 12 Best Things To Do in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Well, Laurel LaBauve of SoPo Cottage has done it again, you guys. She sent me her latest reno project, an old house dubbed “The Ugly Duckling” that got a bright and beachy makeover in Maine. It didn’t look like much to begin with, but she knew it had potential. Here’s how the house looked on Google Street View before the former owners gutted it:By the time Laurel and her team got to it, the house had been ripped down to the studs:They saw an opportunity to add an addition with a garage and a new master suite:Laurel says this is the most complicated and expensive project she’s ever tackled, but the result was worth it!The front door makes a statement in Sherwin Williams Cloudburst:It was built in 1906, and they wanted to capitalize on its original, old-house charm while updating it for modern life. The house was in rough shape. The original staircase had to be rebuilt to meet building code:But now the living room is a light-filled and welcoming space:The new gas fireplace has built-in bookshelves and windows on either side:Laurel says many hours went into cleaning up and installing the antique mantel:Gorgeous! It started as a 3-bedroom house but now has 4 bedrooms and 3 baths. The master suite was built over the new garage addition:One of my favorite new features is this rooftop deck:From here you can see Casco Bay, Spring Point Lighthouse and Fort Gorges. The first floor looked like this on the first day:The living room opens into the kitchen today:They added a custom curved island painted SW Tidewater with a walnut top.The dining room is a new addition across the back of the house:Also part of the new addition: a mudroom and powder room with a glass-top vanity:It wasn’t on the market for long! The listing description read:Only steps from Willard Beach and Fisherman’s Point, this 1906 home and been enlarged and reimagined for today’s lifestyle, while retaining yesterday’s charm. An entertainer’s dream, the open floor plan includes a large kitchen, gas fireplace, built-ins and a formal dining room. The master suite has it all with a spa-like bath, large closet and sitting space with water views. Laurel says, “Ten months later, it’s changed a lot! We’ve gone from concept to reality and transformed the Ugly Duckling into a Swan.” Photo credit: Jamie Salomon, Salomon Photography. You probably note a mom, a dad, and three little boys. Along with the genders and relative ages I’m sure you note the different skin tones. My family is a rainbow. And it is our mixed colors that make us beautiful. Can you imagine a rainbow that was all red or all blue or all green? It would be pretty in its own way because each individual color is beautiful. But a color on its own is not nearly as spectacular as the whole spectrum streaming the sky. It’s the same with people. We are all beautiful in our own individual way. But together, the results are remarkable. I am grateful for my family’s diversity & for the diversity that graces our country. Our unique external and internal colors are what make this world spectacular. I love and respect those that are like me, and I love and respect those that are different. And until lately I thought that was enough. Growing up in a very diverse area of California I didn’t encounter much racism until I was an adult. I am grateful for the loving, accepting environment I was raised in, but because of this limited upbringing I have been naive and possibly even apathetic about the issue of race. I truly thought racism was just an ugly part of our past. Now I know that is not the case. I cannot stand idly by anymore. The world needs more than happy thoughts and good intentions. It is time to fight racism and it is time to embrace diversity. It is time to act, to work together to build a society founded on equality, love, and respect. A society that not only tolerates or accepts diversity, but a society that empowers and depends on each individual’s unique differences. This is a world with limitless possibilities. This is the world that I want my children to be a part of. Today’s world is much more global than the world I grew up in. Issues are no longer contained to the ideologies and behaviors of our family, friends, and neighbors. We are affected by the thoughts and actions of others world wide. Because of this our impact must be felt not just locally but globally. There’s always the question of what to do in this battle against racism. Knowing how to handle this delicate topic can be confusing and a little overwhelming. Let me reassure you, doing something is always better than doing nothing. It is the lack of action that allows and seemingly encourages racism. How to Fight Racism and Embrace DiversityTeach the Children:If our children are the future than the best way to build a better future is by raising aware, sensitive, and unbiased children. If you want to fight racism than you must teach your children. Kids are sponges. They so quickly absorb the ideologies, beliefs, customs, and traditions of those around them. If you demonstrate racial tolerance and openly celebrate diversity it will spread like a wild fire. Celebrate Diversity:One way to introduce the topic is by celebrating what makes each person unique. Start by pointing out the what makes your child unique. Then highlight the differences within your own family and among others you know. Allow your child to recognize the different sizes, shapes, and colors that people come in. Then point out the beauty in each variable. Also, note the internal differences that contribute to our diverse rainbow, our varying tastes, interests, hobbies, passions, and personalities. Embrace New Cultures:The more you expose your children to diversity the more they will grow to love it. Celebrate your own culture while embracing other cultures in your home. My family celebrates St. Nick’s Day as part of my Swiss heritage and later in December we celebrate Kwanzaa to recognize my husband’s African heritage. We have also embraced Boy’s Day from Japan, Cinco de Mayo from Mexico, Hawaii’s Lei Day, Samoa’s White Sunday, and China’s Hey Fat Choi. When we celebrate these holidays we talk about the cultures, we make traditional dishes, and we locate the country of origin on our globe. This is a fun way to make the worlds seem a little smaller. Learn About New Places and New People:Another way we teach our diversity in our home is through travel. Before we visit a new place we educate our children on its location, language, and culture. As we travel we make a point to get to know the place we are visiting and its people on more than a superficial level. We try to speak their language, eat their food, go in to their neighborhoods, and adapt to their ways of life. My children don’t usually go on these getaways but we always bring back gifts and food that are unique to our destination. These simple acts help our children feel connected to the places we travel and to the people that live there. Offer Support:It’s great to love diverse peoples but it’s even better to let those people feel your love. Let your friends and family know you support them and you love them. Being the minority can feel so lonely and scary. You don’t always know exactly who you can turn to. Offer comfort and support, be a shoulder to cry or a hand to hold din times of need, if nothing else, let them know that they are loved. Speak Up:Don’t hide your voice and don’t hide your convictions. I’m not asking you to jump on a soap box and preach your idealogies but don’t be afraid to let others know how you believe. When topics of race come up in natural conversation you can defend your convictions and defend those who need defending. Look for opportunities to promote diversity and a love for all people. Social Media:Social media is one of the easiest and least intrusive ways to show support for a good cause and help fight racism. You can share that awesome article you read, or publicly like that accurate meme you saw or update your profile picture with a message of peace. Watch Your Words:Be mindful of your words. Just because you don’t use derogatory terms doesn’t mean that your language doesn’t hide misleading content. Make sure that the way you speak about people coincides with your beliefs and sends a clear picture of how you feel regarding diversity and racism. Don’t Tolerate:If you hear someone using racist language, even in humor, please stop it. It isn’t funny. Such words are hurtful and they open the door to hate. It can be hard to make a moral stand but it is incredibly important that you do. You can be kind and loving while firmly stating that you do not approve of derogatory language. Many times, people aren’t aware of the offense their words cause and they appreciate the awareness. Link Up:Anti-racism groups are spreading all over the country and online. Connect with like-minded people to show your support, fight racism, and offer help in any way you feel comfortable. Together we can fight racism with consistent love, awareness, and by following these simple steps. By working together we can build a world worthy of our children; all of our uniquely beautiful children. Today, I commit to stand for all people. Will you stand with me? Minute Maid knows that parenting is complicated business, but they also know that what’s true for juice is true for families too—when you put good in, you get good out. Minute Maid’s #doingood campaign is letting parents out there know that they are doing great things — big and small– every single day. You are #doingood. On Monday, I joined a special parenting discussion hosted by Minute Maid, Missy Franklin, and her parents. It was amazing. We sipped juice chatted about our parenting doubts and successes and heard some of the best parenting advice I’ve ever received from Missy’s parents D.A. and Dick. When you watch the video, I promise you’ll fall in love with this family. You can tell in just a few minutes that they are brimming with genuine love for one another. And if I could describe Missy in just one word, it would be radiant. She is full of light and kindness. The room gets brighter when she walks in and she’ll give you a big hug and a grin to match it. Behind the ScenesAfter watching the video you’ll come away with a whole page full of cool things you’ve learned (like the sweetest thing Missy’s mom did to make sure she stayed warm before swim practice). Here are some behind-the-scenes looks at our video shooting, along with five surprising things I learned from talking with Missy Franklin and her parents. {Lights, camera, action. Getting the lighting just right and the camera situated. We had a fun crew of about six behind us the whole time making sure nothing crazy happened.} {Getting fitted for sound. Just as we were getting ready to start, a neighbor fired up his weed eater. “Do you want me to ask him to postpone for a few minutes?” Missy asked sweetly.} {Missy and her mom D.A. chatting before the video. “Mom, your first Facebook Live…that’s so cute!” Missy says.} 5 Surprising Things I Learned about Olympian Missy FranklinSurprisingly, Olympic Gold Medalists are a lot like you and I. Here are five cool things I learned about Missy and her family during our visit. 1. Missy didn’t always “just swim.”Watch the video to find out all the other activities Missy tried, including the other sport Missy had to choose between when she picked swimming. 2. What song Missy listens to before an Olympic event.I would have never guessed this one. When I see Olympic swimmers with their headphones on before a big event, I assume they are listening to some major pump-up music. With Missy Franklin, it’s quite the opposite. What does she listen to before a big event? Frank Sinatra. “It calms me down,” she says. 3. Her parents have never missed a swim meet. Not a single one. Missy’s parents Dick and D.A. have been there for every single swim event of her life. 4. She hangs out in her bare feet.“Is it okay if I do this in my bare feet?” Missy asks. Why not? Even Olympic champions like to get comfy. 5. She has a hard time getting her mom off the phone too! This was one of my favorite parts of the interview. You’ll love it too! Talking with Missy Franklin made me want to tackle hard things…like finally doing level 3 of that Jillian Michaels DVD I’ve been putting off. Talking with her parents made me want to come home and be the best mom I can be. This interview reminded me that I’m #doingood—better than I think sometimes. Tell a parent in your life thank you by sending them a Reverse Care Package and join the conversation online by using the hashtag #doingood. *Thank you to Minute Maid for sponsoring this post. For months now the world has been anticipating a monumental natural phenomenon—a total solar eclipse, also deemed the “Great American Eclipse” is just days away! Experts and eclipse hunters are as giddy as a kid before his birthday. And for good reason; it is going to be pretty incredible if nature has anything to say about it. People who have viewed a total solar eclipse before say you never forget the experience. Others claim some pretty weird things happen. If you want the facts, the experts at NASA have all the basics laid out that are very helpful. But here are three major things you need to know about the impending solar eclipse. 3 Major Things about the Solar Eclipse{Image via Google Maps} 1. How do I view it?If you live on the North American continent, you will be able to see the solar eclipse. Those lucky enough to be within the path of totality shown above will witness a total solar eclipse where the moon completely covers the sun, leaving a celestial ring of the sun’s corona that not many get to see in a lifetime. So the big question in everyone’s mind is: Do I really need special eclipse glasses? Yes, you do. Just like your mama told you to never look at the sun, NASA recommends specific safety instructions. It takes only a few seconds of looking directly at the sun to damage your retina cells. You should never assume you can look away fast enough to avoid damage. Since your retinas have no pain receptors, your eyes can be damaged long before you realize it. Adults and kids alike should all have special-purpose solar filters, a.k.a “eclipse glasses” while viewing the solar eclipse. The only time it’s safe to take off your eclipse glasses is during the 1-2 minute “total” solar eclipse when the moon entirely blocks the brightness of the sun. If you didn’t get your eclipse glasses in time, you can still make a pinhole viewer out of a cereal box! {Image via Amazon. NASA recommends the American Paper Optics brand.} 2. What’s going to happen?Depending on where you live, there will be about a three-hour chunk of time where the moon gradually begins to block the sun. The total eclipse (where the moon completely blocks the sun) will only last about two minutes and 40 seconds, so plan your bathroom breaks accordingly. One would hate to miss the main event. 3. Stranger things…Does a total solar eclipse signal the end of the world? Maybe the Y2K people know; but witnesses of a complete solar eclipse say some pretty unusual things can occur. Here are a few oddities you can look forward to:
